At Ingenuity Builders, we’re always honored to work on projects that connect the past to the present. One of the most meaningful projects we’ve had the privilege of working on was the repair and restoration of the historic Sod Hut at the Minnesota Discovery Center in Chisholm, MN.
A Piece of Iron Range History:
The Sod Hut is more than just a building — it’s a living reminder of how Minnesota’s early settlers and immigrants survived and thrived on the Iron Range. Built with blocks of sod and natural materials, these humble homes were a first shelter for many families who came to this region to mine, farm, and build a life. Standing inside the Sod Hut, you can almost feel the resilience and determination that defined life in northern Minnesota generations ago.
Our team stepped in to:
Repair and stabilize the hut’s framework
Refresh aging materials while keeping true to the original look and feel
Ensure the hut remains safe and accessible for visitors of all ages
It was a rewarding project, not only because of the craftsmanship it required, but because of the story behind it. We don’t just build new — we also protect and preserve what matters most to our communities.
Why It Matters:
Projects like this highlight the importance of historic preservation on the Iron Range and in Duluth, MN. They remind us that our work as builders isn’t only about the present — it’s also about honoring the past and ensuring these stories live on.
We’re thankful to the Minnesota Discovery Center for calling us for this one-of-a-kind project. The next time you’re visiting the Center, make sure to stop by the Sod Hut, step inside, and imagine what life was like for Minnesota’s pioneers.
